The Technology Fee provides funding for the following services.

Apps@UT


Apps@UT is OIT’s cloud computing solution which allows you to remotely run a large variety of software without that software being installed on your computer. You can access Apps@UT from any Windows, Macintosh or Linux computer as well as Apple or Android mobile devices. Software available includes MATLAB, SAS, NVivo, etc.


Academic Software Support Program


The Academic Software Support Program (ASSP) provides many software packages such as SAS, SPSS, MATLAB, AutoCAD, etc. for your use either in the public computer labs, on Apps@UT, or in some cases, via download for your own personnel computer.


Departmental Computer Lab Support


OIT offers support to departmental computer labs by providing common software utilities such as Ghost, Deep Freeze and Keyserver as well as assistance with the technical support of their student computer labs.


OIT HelpDesk


The OIT HelpDesk is available 24/7 to answer questions regarding computing at UTK. You can call 865-974-9900 or fill out an online form at http://remedy.utk.edu/contact/. OIT also offers face-to-face IT support at the Commons in Hodges Library.


Instructional Technology Services for Faculty


OIT offers a variety of resources and support to assist faculty in their efforts to effectively integrate technology into teaching and learning.


Laptop Loaner program


Laptops are available for checkout by any current UT student from the Commons Room 235, and at the AgVetMed and Music Libraries.


Online@UT and LiveOnline@UT


Online@UT is the University of Tennessee, Knoxville's online course management system, which is powered by Instructure Canvas. LiveOnline@UT is used to deliver live, interactive classes via the Internet, and is powered by Zoom.


Public Computer Labs


OIT offers several student computer labs located across the campus that contain a variety of hardware and software including labs in Commons North and South, Art & Architecture 345, Humanities 201 & 202, etc. Each lab includes printers available for printing from both computers in the lab as well as from your own personal computer.


Research Support


The Research Computing Support group helps UT researchers use computing and analytic methods and provides up to 10 free hours of support per semester for research computing.


START Program


OIT's Student Technology Assistants for Research and Teaching (START) Program puts students, selected and trained by OIT staff, with faculty to provide one-on-one assistance for creating computer-based materials or navigating the technology enhanced classroom. Request START help.


Student Computer Service Center


Students may obtain free computer support in the Commons North in Hodges Library. Students can bring their computer (desktop or notebook) to the Commons and receive assistance by dropping off their computer for in-depth troubleshooting or for quick help such as accessing UT’s wireless network.


Training


Face-to Face workshops and online training is available for a number of software packages and topics specifically for students.


VolPrint


VolPrint is the campus pay-for-print solution managed by OIT and provided to any department on campus for management of student printing. The Technology Fee subsidizes printing such that students can print at a low cost of $0.02 per page for black/white printing.


Wireless Infrastructure


OIT maintains a massive wireless network that includes 4300+ access points spread across 100 academic buildings as well as in open areas such as the Presidential Courtyard, the Alumni Memorial Building Amphitheater, the Humanities Amphitheatre, and Circle Park. Wireless is so popular with students that it is continuously being upgraded to handle the more than 20,000+ simultaneous users that are frequently using it on a daily basis.
